Facts

In the context of Russia’s full‑scale invasion and Ukraine’s urgent request for deployable medical capability near the front line, Luxembourg has donated a set of mobile hospital containers to support life‑saving treatment for both military and civilian casualties. These units provide rapidly deployable medical and respite capacity in areas where fixed infrastructure is overwhelmed or destroyed.

The initiative was led by Luxembourg’s Directorate of Defence, in close cooperation with emergency.lu, which jointly agreed to transfer mobile medical units originally procured by North Fire in the United Kingdom. Initially designed as deployable NHS satellite treatment centres during the COVID‑19 pandemic, the units have been repurposed to strengthen Ukraine’s frontline medical response.

To maximise efficiency and ensure coordinated European support, Luxembourg routed the entire donation through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), enabling EU co‑financing for the intra‑EU transport leg and ensuring direct delivery to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

For the April 2025 operation, mobile hospital containers were prepared for overland transport. Each unit was loaded onto a dedicated truck for movement from the UK/EU area to the Rzeszów‑Jasionka in Poland—an established logistics hub for international assistance to Ukraine.

From Rzeszów, onward movement into Ukraine proceeded under military coordination to ensure secure delivery to the Ministry of Defence.
