In April 2025, a major earthquake struck Myanmar, causing extensive destruction across multiple regions and leaving millions affected. Homes, public services and essential infrastructure suffered heavy damage, forcing thousands of families into temporary displacement and creating urgent needs for shelter, sanitation and basic household supplies.

Responding through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), Luxembourg—via emergency.lu—mobilised emergency relief items from its humanitarian stockpile. The deployment supported two key humanitarian partners working in the affected areas:
- Portable toilets for the World Health Organization (WHO) to reinforce urgent public health and sanitation needs in overcrowded displacement zones.
- Shelter and household items for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), including family tents, thermal blankets and kitchen sets to support vulnerable households who had lost their homes.
The operation, coordinated jointly by DG ECHO, the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) and Luxembourg authorities, consisted of an international air shipment of nearly 100m³ of relief items. The cargo was transported in two rotations to Yangon, enabling IOM and WHO to rapidly distribute life‑saving assistance to more than 500 affected families while addressing critical WASH gaps following the disaster.
