Facts

Following the severe degradation of medical infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, the World Health Organization (WHO) coordinated the evacuation of critically ill patients—including infants—to third countries able to provide life‑saving care. Among them was a one‑year‑old boy whose urgent medical condition could no longer be treated locally due to the destruction of hospitals and specialised facilities.

As part of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) medical evacuation pipeline, Luxembourg supported this effort through emergency.lu by providing dedicated MEDEVAC capacity operated by Luxembourg Air Ambulance (LAA).

On 15 January 2025, Luxembourg Air Ambulance conducted the medical evacuation of the one‑year‑old patient, accompanied by three family members, transporting them safely from Bucharest to Tirana, Albania. A four‑person LAA medical and flight crew ensured continuous in‑flight care and stabilisation tailored to the child’s condition. All logistics, flight arrangements and costs were covered under the EU Civil Protection/UCPM framework.
