Facts

On 16 March 2025, a tragic nightclub fire in Skopje resulted in numerous casualties, overwhelming local medical capacity and requiring urgent international support to ensure specialised care for severely injured survivors. In response, Luxembourg contributed to the coordinated European effort to transfer burn patients to appropriate medical facilities abroad.

On 17 March 2025, and in close coordination between the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MAINT) and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), Luxembourg facilitated the medical evacuation of four patients from North Macedonia through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).

Two patients were transferred to Hungary, and two others to Croatia, where specialised burn units were able to provide the advanced treatment required. In parallel, Luxembourg Air Ambulance (LAA) conducted a dedicated Medevac operation for two burn patients and two companions, transporting them from Skopje to Luxembourg via Budapest. This mission formed part of a coordinated cross‑border medical response co‑funded by the European Union.
